The image titled Dance of Death (1924) depicts seven male Mavo artists, six posed as women in various states of undress. Some are drunk, others smoking, and three are engaged in a sexual encounter. When stripped of all context the image is notably radical for the nineteen-twenties, particularly from within Taisho Japan (1912-1926), a society grasping to maintain conservative moral values. But when we insert ourselves into this moment, understanding the rapid change brought by modernism and the complicated negotiation between traditional ideology and daily life (seikatsu), perhaps the Dance of Death is not so unfamiliar. The female body - frequently controlled, contained, and debated - is a symbol for liberation in this case, and the male actors performing as women in Dance of Death reflect an ideology of non-conformity, offering evidence of the female body as an allegory for rebellion and a symbol of transformation during Japan's modernization.
