The Problem Of God Yesterday And Today

Available: macOS, Windows, Android, Tablet

In an urbane and persuasive tract for our time, the distinguished Catholic theologian combines a comprehensive metaphysics with a sensitivity to contemporary existentialist thought. Father Murray traces the “problem of God” from its origins in the Old Testament, through its development in the Christian Fathers and the definitive statement by Aquinas, to its denial by modern materialism. Students and nonspecialist intellectuals may both benefit by the book, which illuminates the problem of development of doctrine that is now, even more than in the days of Newman, a fundamental issue between Roman Catholic and Protestant, theologians and nonspecialst intellectuals alike will find the subject of vital interest. As a challenge to the ecumenical dialogue, the question is raised whether, in the course of its development through different phases, the problem of God has come back to its original position. Father Murray is Ordinary professor of theology at Woodstock College, Woodstock, Maryland. St. Thomas More Lectures, 1. "A gem of a book—lucid, illuminating, brilliantly written. A fine contribution to the current Catholic theological renaissance."—Paul Weiss.

How To Think About God

Available: macOS, Windows, Android, Tablet

Dr. Adler, in his discussion, extends and modernizes the argument for the existence of God developed by Aristotle and Aquinas. Without relying on faith, mysticism, or science (none of which, according to Dr. Adler, can prove or disprove the existence of God), he uses a rationalist argument to lead the reader to a point where he or she can see that the existence of God is not necessarily dependent upon a suspension of disbelief. Dr. Adler provides a nondogmatic exposition of the principles behind the belief that God, or some other supernatural cause, has to exist in some form. Through concise and lucid arguments, Dr. Adler shapes a highly emotional and often erratic conception of God into a credible and understandable concept for the lay person.

The Dilemmas Of American Conservatism

Available: macOS, Windows, Android, Tablet

In the second half of the twentieth century, American conservatism emerged from the shadow of New Deal liberalism and developed into a movement exerting considerable influence on the formulation and execution of public policy in the United States. During that period, the political philosophers who provided the intellectual foundations for the American conservative movement were John H. Hallowell, Eric Voegelin, Leo Strauss, Richard Weaver, Russell Kirk, Robert Nisbet, John Courtney Murray, Friedrich Hayek, and Willmoore Kendall. By offering a comprehensive analysis of their thoughts and beliefs, The Dilemmas of American Conservatism both illuminates the American conservative imagination and reveals its most serious contradictions. The contributing authors question whether a core set of conservative principles can be determined based on the frequently diverging perspectives of these key philosophers.

The Disaster Of The Absence Of Moral And Religious Education In The American Public Schools

Available: macOS, Windows, Android, Tablet

Thomas Aquinas, in his philosophy of religion, said that man is a religious being (homo religiosus). By this he meant that man is a being that naturally stretches to the beyond, to the unknown outside of himself. He yearns and reaches out for an infinite peace, joy, and happiness. He does all within his power to grasp an endless happiness, a joy that knows no end. This has been his instinctive, conscious, and unconscious aspiration. He tends to pursue and grab that which captures his attention and wins his admiration. Many a time, he ends up grabbing a shadow, an illusion of real happiness, an illusion of the source of true and lasting happiness. When he grabs that shadow, he settles to worship it as the ultimate source of an infinite happiness. It will not be long before he discovers that it is all a mirage. This ultimate joy and happiness is not found within mans immediate environment, because whatever he clings to seems to fail in providing such ultimate joy, peace, and happiness, which men, by nature, tend to yearn and long for. Man has always interpreted peace, joy, happiness, and their sources differently. Thus, his beliefs and objects of worship, devotion, and dedication vary one from anotherhence the reason for different world religions and creeds today (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, atheism, etc.). To say that man is a religious being implies that naturally man always believes in and worships something. Hence, there can never be an atheist in the real sense of it. Not to believe is to believe. For example, not to believe in the existence of God is to believe that God does not exist. Even though some people do not believe in the existence of a personal God or god, they still believe in something, which could be anythingmoney, freedom, wealth, riches, power, beauty, achievement, talent, name it. Just as our ancient fathers believed in carved idols as gods and worshipped them, so do people in the modern time hold on tenaciously to all kinds of idols in the form of money, beauty, wealth, riches, power, achievement, talent, etc., and worship them as gods and hope that someday these might give them an endless peace and happiness, which have been the ultimate end of mans endeavor or pursuit on earth. This false hope of mans longing to achieve endless peace and happiness from material possessions or natural endowment explains itself in some ancient cultures whereby the dead are buried along with some of their possessions, including gold, money, slaves, etc. The fact that people of outstanding talents, riches, and wealth have committed suicide has put a big question mark to this erroneous ideology that happiness could be achieved through material possession. What was wrong in the lives of those affluent and talented people who killed themselves contrary to all instincts of self-preservation? What was missing in their lives that none of their material acquisitions or achievements could satiate or afford? Man longs for lasting happiness. He has the capacity to conceive and yearn for infinite happiness. Hence, he does not want to be happy today and sad tomorrow. But how would he achieve that joy or happiness that has no end, which has always remained mans unrealized dream? No branch of discipline or knowledge has been able to provide an answer and a remedy to mans natural longing for endless joy, lasting peace, and happiness, but religion. Religion has an answer, a remedy, and a hope. In this book, I will demonstrate how religion provides an answer, a remedy, and a hope for mans ultimate search and yearning for lasting peace and happiness in his life and in the society in which he lives. I will explore the idea that man is a spiritual as well as a religious being. I will also delve into how his natural endowment with freedom, intellect, and will enables him to express his religiosity. I will further demonstrate how the misinterpretation and misapplication

Development Of Christian Doctrine

Available: macOS, Windows, Android, Tablet

The problem of change has assumed great prominence in much of the current ferment in theology, and many of the issues in question can best be interpreted as relating to the validity and limits of doctrinal development. The questions cannot be faced constructively, however, until the development of doctrine has been clearly charted, a historical as well as a theological assignment. In this unique introductory survey—more modest in scope but more scholarly in method than Cardinal Newman’s great programmatic essay of 1845—Mr. Pelikan presents three case histories of the particular doctrines that have crucial points of division among Christians. His cogent analyses of Cyprian on Original Sin, Athanasius on the Virgin Mary, and Hilary on the Holy Spirit demonstrate the interaction between the sacramental life of the Church and the intellectual work of the theologian that consistently marked the development of doctrine by the early Fathers. Thus they clarify some central aspects of the continuing theological and ecumenical debates. Mr. Pelikan, Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Yale University, is the author of many books and articles, including a forthcoming full-scale history of the development of doctrine.

Trust God Even In The Fiery Furnace

Available: macOS, Windows, Android, Tablet

So many people are defeated by life’s trials and tribulations because they put their trust in man and not in God. Trials will always occur in some form or fashion in our lives. We are either entering a trial, in the midst of a trial or getting over a trial. When we go through trials we all react differently especially when we face fiery trials and tribulations. Your fiery trial may be different than mine. Fiery trials may involve your health, finances, family problems, addictions, legal problems, homelessness and poverty. Some people react to trials through worldly solutions such as, alcohol, drugs, and searching for answers in all the wrong places from all the wrong people. Some people check out completely by committing suicide because they feel that there is no other way out of their circumstances. Some people go to God for answers and they find peace because they trust God to solve their problems. This book teaches us to trust God in all circumstances no matter what our fiery trials may be. Proverbs 3:5 and 6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not on your own understanding: In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths.” We should trust God even in the fiery furnace just like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego did when they had their fiery furnace trial. This book reveals how you can have hope in hopeless situations, comfort and joy in the midst of suffering and peace in the midst of chaos when you trust God even in the fiery furnace.
